The fast food chains do not have an easy life these days. Threatened with prosecution, accused all sides of the health and damage the environment, boycotted by various pressure groups, they try to develop more healthy menus or convince us of the benefits of their produits.Mais that is it really?
Conflicting results
In his successful documentary Super Size Me, Morgan Spurlock the director decides to eat only McDonald's for a month. It takes 11 kg and increases cholesterol of 0.65 grams per liter of sang.Pourtant, a similar study showed, on the contrary, it was possible to lose weight!
Some channels claim to offer a healthy menu that meets the requirements of Canada's Food Guide. Truth or marketing? It is clear that fast food is still very harmful to health. Here are some explanations and figures that will make you lose your appetite ...
Figures to support
- Between 5 and 6 million people aged 20 to 64 years suffer from obesity in Canada. It's almost a third of the population. In 2000, obese represented less than 15% of the population.
- In children, the percentage rises to 20%, whereas it was 10% in 2000 and only 2% in 1981!
Blame the fast food?
Strangely, this dangerous trend coincides with the arrival of fast food chains in our lives. It would obviously be wrong to say that fast food is solely responsible for the obesity epidemic, but it is a major factor. For example, a study published by the National Bureau of Economic Research in the United States in 2009 shows that the presence of a fast food restaurant located within 150 meters of a school obesity increases by 5%.
In the same vein, the Institute for Clinical Evaluative Sciences in Ontario has shown a direct link between the presence of fast food chains and a higher rate of obesity, heart disease and diabetes in the general population. In an area where there are 10-19 restaurants of this kind, the mortality rate increases by 35% and hospitalization rate of 28%, regardless of whether one is in an area rich or poor. In neighborhoods with more than 20 restaurants, increased mortality rate rises to 62%!
A question of calories
In general, an adult should eat 2000 to 2500 calories per day. However, a simple little dinner in a fast food chain could meet these needs in one meal!
For example, a double hamburger with sauce and cheese, fries and a soda alone contains 1400 calories and 58 grams of fat (although it should take a maximum of 65 per day). A pepperoni pizza? 800 calories and 39 grams of fat.
In another popular restaurant, claiming to be a healthy fast food restaurant, a sandwich with meatballs are twelve pouc contains no less than 1000 calories and 33 grams of fat!
It is true that it is possible to eat in a balanced way in this kind of restaurant, but to do this, you will need to cut the fat mayonnaise and sauces, take whole wheat bread and of course refuse and soda bag of chips. Easier said than done!
What we found (or not) in the fast-food
It is not surprising to find a lot of sodium (in French fries, meat etc..), Refined sugar (in soft drinks and desserts, but also in many sauces and other products) and a large amount of fat trans and saturated fats (in meat, fried breadcrumbs, fried). There are also chemicals used to preserve meat longer or improve the color and flavor of certain products.
For a balanced meal, generally suggested to try to have six flavors in the dish, or salty, sweet, sour, pungent, bitter and astringent. In most fast food chains, there are only three flavors: salty, sweet and acid. These flavors are not harmful in themselves, but they are a further indication of the imbalance of these meals.
Risks of fast food in brief
In addition to obesity, diabetes and heart disease, we also note the high blood pressure, certain cancers (prostate, pancreas, ovaries, uterus, intestines) as well as sleep disorders and increased risk of depression. These last two may seem surprising. One wonders indeed why a cheeseburger is likely to depress us!
In fact, what makes fast food is harmful not only what is there but what is not there! Indeed, this type of food does not really enough minerals and vitamins. However, they are fundamental to good mental and physical health.
Numerous studies have also shown that eating junk food two or more times a week can lead to dependence. Therefore, when you stop to eat, our body is missing, which can cause, among other sleep disorders.
Eat well to stay healthy!
Good fries or a good burger once or twice a month is nothing dramatic. Everything is a matter of dosage. That said, it is quite possible not to miss while eating healthy, and simply taking time to eat home.
Instead of visiting a fast food restaurant, go to the butcher to buy meat quality. Take the passage of whole wheat hamburger buns. On the way, stop at a small fruit store to buy fresh tomatoes and lettuce, some potatoes for fries that will cook in the oven with a little olive oil. To drink, a glass of vegetable juice and a pitcher of fresh water will delight all famille.Et here on your kitchen table a good trio hamburger, fries and drink just as delicious and healthy!
