A blood poisoning, also called septicemia is a severe bacterial infection of the bloodstream.
causes
It can start from an infected wound or infection occurred previously, and move very quickly to the organs.
Under normal conditions, the immune system is able to fight against pathogens from outside. Infections that result are "local infections." Sepsis occurs in the form of serious infection in the body, when pathogens invade the blood and the lymphatic organs of the body.
symptoms
The most common signs of blood poisoning are:
- A rapid heartbeat
- Chills
- A rapid increase or decrease of body temperature
- Reddening of the skin
- Mental confusion.
Where intoxication is advanced, it can also cause a dangerous dilation of blood vessels.
At this stage, accelerated breathing is very common. Blood pressure can drop rapidly and cause death of the person. It is therefore important to go to the hospital or call an ambulance when one suffers from these symptoms.
Illnesses or accidents responsible
Is blood poisoning caused by pathogenic microorganisms and their toxic products in the blood. A small infection that is neglected can spread to the bloodstream. Blood poisoning can begin an infection of the tooth, a urinary tract or salmonella.
In most cases, pathogens are viruses, bacteria or fungi. When the body is no longer able to fight against infection locally, pathogens can spread throughout the body via the bloodstream.
Frequent causes of sepsis
- Pneumonia
- Infections of the urinary tract and genitals
- Infections of the abdominal organs
- Wound infections and soft tissue
- Line Infections
- Infections of the central nervous system
- Inflammation of the heart valves
- ENT Infections
Other risk factors
- Weak immune system in leukemia, HIV infection, chemotherapy, among very elderly or debilitated
- Wounds and after extensive burns
- Surgical
common symptoms
- Pain, redness, swelling at the site of infection
- General feeling of illness
- Chills and fever
At a later stage, the following symptoms may be added:
- Confusion, dizziness, syncope due to hypotension
- Rapid breathing
- Rapid heart rate
- Apathy, pallor
- Voltage drop with onset of shock = medical emergency.
